The creation of sustainable environments, i.e. environments which are self-supporting (or can be supported with available resources), is developing into an important goal for the planning professions. In this paper, an attempt is made to motivate the need for this approach within the urban context. The city of Curitiba, Brazil, is then described as a working example of a city that has reached the point where it is functioning in a sustainable way.
