The fact that students live together in different types of communal residences is no new occurrence, and in the Bloemfontein community more and more students of the University of the Free State (UFS) prefer not to live on campus, but rather move to the suburbs. The article focuses on specific urban planning principles regarding these student houses that have an influence on the work procedure of Bloemfontein's urban planning fraternity. It concludes that the question is far more than merely defining a new zoning category in the Town Planning Scheme, and that a comprehensive deliberation process is also required.
