Abstract

"Functional urbanization encompasses the location of towns or a hierarchy of towns within the homogeneous matrix  - homogeneous in terms of unity of social, financial and administrative organization, tied together by an integrated system of communications." Apart from the regional thought contained therein, this description of Page can also be seen as the ideal urbanization model for a developing country. However, there seems to be two aspects that can be referred. First, it seems that a large urban concentration is unavoidable before the process may become self-correcting. Secondly, there are indications that some of the less successful (unworkable) aspects of modern metropoles are also accepted for developing cities. Many of the developing countries have not yet reached a population population comparable to some metropolitan areas of the Western world.
