Due to the fact that Town and Regional Planning is a relatively new profession in this country, and as yet not fully ''professionalized", very little recorded information exists about the profile of the South African planner. The question surrounding the planner in practice resulted in a survey being undertaken in 1983, the purpose of which was to outline the professional profile of the town and regional planner in terms of his sociographic characteristics, his views about membership of the Institute, his educational background and his perception of his occupational image. In this article the relevant information revealed in the survey is briefly described.
