For continual educational purposes in our planning profession, the Durban Planning Africa 2002 conference was an important event. The organisers must be complimented on the programme and the smooth running of events. A few lessons can however be learned from the events. Not one of the presenters spoke an African language. Much was said about poverty and sustainability, but no mentioning was made of the high population growth in Africa, since family planning can be regarded as a means to increase wealth and decrease the strain on our natural resources.
