Abstract

Tourism is an industry and a system that can lead to sustainable development, if planning and development is done holistically and based on the proper application of planning instruments and principles. If not, development will be negative and destroy the very resource base it relies upon. The development of a matrix may assist town and regional planners in determining the economic, social, cultural and physical im pacts of tourism development on the destination over time, thus presenting guidelines for alteration in the planning and development in order to ensure sustainable tourism development. Greater Phalaborwa has been chosen as study area due to its vast resource base and current emergence into the field of tourism. It has been found that tourism currently plays an important role as development agent, but with sustainable planning and development it could have a more substantial impact.
