The area of ??South West Africa covers an area of ??824 269 sq. Km, of which approximately 935 000 people currently live. This population can be divided into 12 groups whose Wambo's are by far the largest. Currently, 46% of the total population of South West Africa consists of Wambo's.
Other population groups, which in 1970 represented more than 5% of the total population of South West Africa, are the following: Whites (12, 1%); Damaras (8.7%); Hereroes (6.6%) and Kavango's (6.6%). The smallest population is the Tswana who owns 0.5% of the population of S.W.A. form. The total population of South West Africa was, according to the 1970 Population Census, 746 327 versus 434 081 in 1951 and 227 739 in 1921. The average population growth between 1951 and 1970 was thus 2.9% per annum. Based on the growth trends for the different population groups up to 1970, estimates of the composition and total population for 1978 and 2000 have been made. This information is contained in Table 1. According to this, it appears that the population of South West Africa will double over the 1970s and 2000 if current growth trends persist. In addition, it appears that all the population groups except the Whites, Kaokolanders, Herero's, Tswana and "other" percentages in the year 2000 will form a larger proportion of the total population of South West Africa than in 1970.
