Abstract

This article focuses on plans and policies for outdoor recreation in Region no 31 and begins by examining physical, socio- economic, cultural and historic factors there. Reference is made to problems arising in a 100-kilometer corridor of the Modder River, such as water pollution, threatened fish and bird-life, the role of private owners, multiple-use, watersport, the users and management of resorts. A plea is made for comprehensive planning to replace the present ad hoc approach to recreation.
