Abstract

The proclamation of the Magaliesberg Nature Area in 1977 created so much resistance from the farming community that a drastic reduction in size of the area is now being considered. The logic of such a step is questioned because of the fact that the proposed smaller area does not comply with the ecological requirements of size, form and diversity of viable ecosystems. Recommendations as to the creation of a multi-purpose National Park, based on a combination of overseas models and scientific theories, are presented.
