Abstract

The development of planning procedu­ral theory with an emphasis upon data collection and analysis is reviewed. A brief critique of the Master Plan approach, with an assessment of the likely influence that Geographic Infor­mation Systems (GIS) will have upon it and planning practice in South Africa is made. Alternative approaches and their relationship with the new technology are discussed and conclu­sions drawn as to the impact of GIS on South African Planning.
