Abstract

The development of planning procedural theory with an emphasis upon data collection and analysis is reviewed. A brief critique of the Master Plan approach, with an assessment of the likely influence that Geographic Information Systems (GIS) will have upon it and planning practice in South Africa is made. Alternative approaches and their relationship with the new technology are discussed and conclusions drawn as to the impact of GIS on South African Planning.
