Abstract

The clandestine military operations that the South African Air Force conducted in Angola and Rhodesia from 1966-1974, served as a perfect example of what was to follow in South-West Africa. The Portuguese in Angola and the Rhodesian Military Forces each had a specific way of executing military operations. Factors like terrain, own forces and the enemy played a major role in determining the specific operation, as well as the way in which it was conducted. The SAAF's personnel that was stationed in these areas had to contend with severe hardships, but valuable lessons were learned.
