Abstract

In this article the phenomenon of commandos, their roll and utilisation and the way they came into being in South Africa, the Free State and Bloemfontein are discussed. The history, utilisation and ultimate disbandment of the Bloemfontein City Commando are depicted. There were times of intense action but also long periods of inactivity.
