Abstract

As in much of Africa, organised anti-colonialist nationalism developed in Mozambique after the Second World War and a number of political parties were formed to express anti-Portuguese sentiment. The Frente de Libertaçao de Mozambique (FRELIMO) was formed in 1962 as an amalgamation of a number of Mozambican nationalist parties, with Eduardo Mondlane, an associate professor of Syracuse University, as FRELIMO's first president. Early on in the struggle for liberation, the question of international recognition arose.
