Abstract

Church Square, Pretoria, traditionally enjoyed considerable prestige as an important symbol in Afrikaans speaking circles in South Africa. A number of historical factors contributed to this appraisal in the heritage discourse of society at large. In recent years however there have been a number of significant shifts in accent. These transformations become apparent when the sites and their intrinsic symbolism, are considered in the context of present-history. The period 1989-1997 was singled out for investigation. Thematological as well as chronological interpretations of events and trends suggest that contemporary social economic and political perceptions of Church Square indicate important transformations. This state of affairs can be ascribed to a number of factors. Amongst these the de facto acceptance of the need for change in society, practical considerations, and effective marketing strategies, were the major driving forces.
