Abstract

When the Anglo-Boer War broke out in 1899, the Pedi in the eastern Transvaal were split into three main groups occupying the country northeast of the Steelpoort and the northern Middelburg district. The only Whites who lived in this area included the families of the sub-Native Commissioner, WR van der Wal, the missionary JA Winter and a few white traders.
