Abstract

In October 1999 the Department of History of the University of the Free State hosted a comprehensive international conference to commemorate the outbreak of the Anglo-Boer War exactly a hundred years previously. Some of the papers read during that conference were published in a special edition of the Journal for Contemporary History (volume 25, number 2, December 2000).
In order to commemorate the official ending of the war a hundred years ago on 31 May 1902, and simultaneously also concluding the centenary of the war (briefly referred to as ABWIOO) academically, the Department of History of the University of the Free State hosted a day seminar on the war on 25 May 2002, in conjunction with the War Museum in Bloemfontein.
