This article, written from a reformed diaconiological point of departure, tries to make a contribution towards the pastoral care of people trafficking in the occult. A theoretical basis for further research is established by usage of the methodological model of Rolf Zerfass. According to this approach there is a healthy interaction between theory and praxis. In this research use is made of the relevant poimenetical literature to identify certain theological principles which could be helpful in developing a basis theory for the pastoral care and counselling to occultly plagued persons. Secondary to these principles, the relevant literature concerning pastoral care to occultly plagued people are examined. These principles are compared and tested against the results of an empirical study conducted in conjunction with the Sociology Department at UOFS. A theoretica basis concerning the poimenetical investigation is established and certain practical-theoretical suggestions are made for further research.
