Abstract

This paper will attempt lo illustrate G em einschaft (community centred) versus G eselschaft (centred around the individual) settlement patterns as a result of the major ideoloeical shift from pre 10 post industrial Southern African society. The aim is to understand the social and physical consequences of such a paradigm shift, and to assign value to private sector "monuments” in spile of their Geselschaft origins, as these also contribute to collet live memory.
