Abstract

When, after ten years of absence, Ian McHarg returned to the rural surroundings outside Glasgow where he grew up, he had to find out to his greatest disillusionment that the big city had swallowed all the beautiful spots. The hills were dumped to fill the valleys, demolished the farmhouses; every tree, bush, rock, fern and orgidiee was gone. Instead, there were rows and rows of uniform cottages around narrow streets - all in the name of town planning, the profession to which McHarg was so capable.
