Abstract

Compared with Europe, our cities and towns have a relatively short history. In addition, there are fewer old buildings. Therefore, the need to preserve our heritage is underlined. Attention is drawn to the fact that not only individual buildings, but also building groups and indeed even larger areas and the surrounding landscape that form part of an overall conservation strategy should be included. In this article we look at some general principles with regard to conservation and applicable legislation and other mechanisms that can be used to protect these sensitive areas.
