Abstract

From text: In traditional African societies marriage is one of the factors taken into account when determining the rights, duties and obligations of an individual in society, in other words to determine the status of the individual in that particular societal grouping. It is common cause that there is a perceived inequity between men and women in African society. This becomes apparent when taking into account the massive research that has been done on this specific issue, especially matters relating to polygamy and the requirement of lobolo as a prerequisite for a valid customary marriage.
